Today I’d like to talk about one of the biggest additions that Google has recently made to local search results, and that has been the addition of the Google Carousel. The Google Carousel is an extension of Google Places that visually ties the Map and customer reviews together in an interactive presentation at the top of local search results. As SEP Connect has long predicted, customer reviews are becoming a more integral part of ranking in the Google algorithm. Scroll over the new Google Carousel and watch the pin on the Map highlight the location of the related business (see our previous blog post on claiming your Google Places profile). If you’re lucky enough to be featured in this new section above the organic placements you will likely notice a significant increase in your click through traffic. To access the new Google Carousel, one simply needs to enter a query relative to a local service, such as ‘restaurants near me’ or ‘hotels near me’. Google Places averages 14.5 percent of the clicks happening on the front page. With the new Carousel, Google is expecting for that percentage to increase substantially. Once a client places an order for search engine placement, a representative of SEP Connect reviews their business information for accuracy and completeness. Having a robust business profile is a key element to strong search engine placement results. Typically, this review includes validating the client name, address and phone number, as well as any social media sites and multi-media content a client may have. In addition to reviewing the business information, the SEP Connect representative will go over the top search terms for that particular business and industry.  Once all of the key terms are collected and the representative of SEP Connect reviews the business information, the order is submitted to the next step of the process. The good news for our new client is that they are now done until our Customer Service department calls to review their placement rankings. Now, wasn’t that easy?

Next, a content specialist from SEP Connect reviews the submitted order and writes custom content for the new listings based on the business information provided.  This content is very important to ensuring that our new client places well.  The SEP Connect content specialist will create this new relevant content based specifically on the top key terms and locations selected for the campaign. Once the content is complete, our content specialist submits the client business profile to be built out.

The third step in the SEP Connect process is the build out phase.  SEP Connect technicians will take the new content, all of the clients social media profile page links, web site link and Google Places information and place them into the custom profile pages on the SEP Connect technology platform. We don’t even touch your website! This process typically takes 48-72 hours depending on the number of cities that the client would like to target market.

Keywords are the most important part of your SEO effort, whether for your website or another service like SEP Connect. But how can you make sure you’ve gotten your keywords right?

In Part I of my blog Choosing Keyword Phrases, I gave you a few simple tips on how to choose keywords for your business. Now, let’s check to see if they are the “right” ones. If the keywords are searched infrequently, no one is there, and you don’t get new clients (unless you followed our advice in long-tail search terms). If the keywords are extremely popular, you may not be able to place for them. Also, always keep in mind; will someone search for this locally? If so, how do people search in your area- does your city have a nickname, do they search by counties, or is there another city in America with the same name? Localized searches, if relevant, are the most important part of this optimization because this determines whether you will be found for each specific service where you are.

To verify your key words as appropriate, start by checking out Google’s keyword toolgoogle-adwords. Search your rough draft ideas here, and Google will provide you with more ideas that are similar. They have the analytics to tell you how often these phrases are searched, but keep in mind: these results pertain to ADS, not website SEO click through. After you have searched all of your ideas, and saved the suggestions you liked that were relevant, export this information and sort it in excel for high frequency (or what you need). Check for competitiveness during this process, and pick the medium-high to medium-low competitive key words. Once you have your 10, check to see how they rank!

In short, a low level of competition, with a high volume of searches recently, all the while including high value for visitors searching will yield hot leads coming in and success. You either have too much business today or you don’t. Regardless, you can always do better in your SEO efforts, especially local search optimization. The most important thing you can do is pick the appropriate keywords. If people can’t find you when they type in their search, you are not relevant and are not going to get new business. But connecting with these potential customers is not as hard as you might think. The greatest part is that there is virtually no cost to figure out this imperative market research phase, and the returns can be enormous if done properly. I hate to say it, but this is probably the most underdeveloped part of any business- deciding on the correct 10 keyword phrases to optimize your website for.

There are several ways to figure out what keyword terms to use, but the simplest is: what would you type into Google to find this? Think like the customers you have been servicing, and think about what they call you for and how they refer to your work. There is a good chance they will type something similar into the search engines. Another way to find out what the consumer is typing into the search engines is to do some light straw polling around town. Go up to an acquaintance at church, someone at Rotary, ask the teller at the bank, or maybe even the elderly couple at the diner: what would you type into Google if <blank happens>? All you need to insert here is a type of problem that your service solves. An example of this would be, if a tree limb fell on your roof tomorrow, what would you type into Google to find someone that could help you fix this? These are the people that will be searching for you in the future. Find out how they search.

Another method to find the right keyword is to review the competitions’ SEO keywords. This is simple enough to do by right-clicking on the competition’s website, and “View Page Source.” Look at the key word meta-tags to see what they are optimizing. This can help guide you, but you must remember to take what you find with a grain of salt. Remember the old adage, “The blind leading the blind.”

The last way to do some minor research is to perform Google searches for what you think is good, and see what comes up. If there are a lot of ads, maps, and/or directories, this is probably a competitive key term. The less you find of these, the less competition you will face to get to the front page. Remember, this is a brainstorming stage to set you up for success. You are laying the mortar that will keep everything together- without this, all efforts were for naught!
